Compare per gigabyte, not just the total

A cheap-looking total price is not always the cheaper plan. On a two-week trip the difference between plans usually comes down to the price per gigabyte, so we show both figures wherever a carrier publishes them.

02 · Trip length

Match the validity period to your trip

Data allowances are usually bundled with a fixed validity window. A short break and a month-long stay need different shapes of plan — buying a 30-day allowance for a four-day trip is the most common way travellers overspend.

03 · Device

Confirm your phone supports eSIM first

eSIM needs a compatible handset, and a few regional model variants that look identical do not support it. Check before you pay — an eSIM you cannot install is not a bargain.

What actually is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a SIM that lives inside your phone as software rather than a plastic card. You install it by scanning a code, and it gives you a second line for data while your normal number stays exactly where it is.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Most phones released in the last few years do, but not all — and a few regional variants of popular models do not. Check your model against the carrier's compatibility list before buying. If your phone does not support eSIM, a physical travel SIM still works.

Should I buy before I fly or after I land?

Before you fly. Installing while you still have reliable home wifi means you land already connected, and it removes the airport wifi-and-password scramble. Installation can be done at any point once you have the code.

Will I keep my own phone number?

Yes. A travel eSIM runs alongside your normal SIM as a second line. Your own number stays active for calls and messages; you simply tell your phone to use the travel eSIM for data.

How does trip-esim make money?
